SHE MEANT TROUBLE is a hardboiled Noir detective movie. The film consists of 320 handmade and hand- altered slides projected from four carousel slide projectors. Two projectors display images and two display captions whose text is drawn from 1940s etiquette manuals and detective novels. Pronouns have been changed and nouns erased to create a laconic Noir language that troubles gender.
Each slide projector houses 80 slides and runs on a timer set at a slightly different interval. The phase shift between the slide projectors, whose beams are overlaid, means that the resultant movie is never the same — its loose narrative weaving in different ways with every showing. The ever-changing, momentary compositions of image and text blend figuration and abstraction in a homage to queer cinema and early experimental animation.
Contact microphones amplify the slide projectors’ fans and advancing slides. An industrial fan is installed in front of the speakers. The sounds form a mechanical “folly” soundtrack evoking gunshots and footsteps amid a distorted hum.
