POSTCARDS
is an open-ended, turn-taking game. It is played using picture postcards purchased in museums. The postcards reproduce a wide array of artworks and artifacts from around the world, ranging from contemporary art to archeological objects. While the game can be played using anybody’s personal postcard collection, in 2020 it was also produced as a 5-edition box set prototype that includes 300 postcards and a booklet with instructions and suggestions for a variety of gameplay.

In the basic form of the game, players are invited to collectively create unique grid-composition layouts, playing by turn from “hands” of ten postcards drawn by chance. These layouts are generated collectively over the course of the game, as players make idiosyncratic visual connections between images based on perceived affinities. The connections are inherently individual and unique to the specific moment of play and the dynamic of the playing group.

The game was developed in collaboration with artists Tomer Rosenthal and Davíd Raphael Lockard, and art historian Jesse Lockard, along with many other artists, friends and students who played the game in its various iterations, honing its rules, structures and forms. It has been played in myriad settings, from seminar rooms and art studios, to dinner parties, to galleries and museums.

The project draws on the long history of the use of reproduction as a mode of popular access to art and of the use of photographic assemblages as a tool of inquiry into art’s history, referencing projects such as Aby Warburg’s Mnemosyne Atlas, André Malraux’s Imaginary Museum, and David Hockney’s Great Wall. However it eschews the fixedness of linear historical narratives, reveling in the sense of wonderment and startling illumination generated by chance encounters of objects and pictures.
