ORPHEUS, ORPHEUS is a two-channel video projected on two sides of an exhibition space. In both videos, the camera moves slowly through the exhibition galleries of the Rothschild Museum of Antiquities on the border between East and West Jerusalem, a vestige of British colonial archaeology in the Middle East. One video is shot as a dolly-in while the other is a dolly-out. This means that on one screen the space comes towards the viewer while on the other it retreats. The footage has been digitally manipulated to make each gallery accessible though an arched doorway, subverting the real architecture of the museum and instead creating an impossible architectural mis en abyme.
Objects have been digitally added and removed from the archaeological displays. These interventions, along with voice-over narration, excerpts of oral history interviews, and animated text, relate a narrative consisting of two stories of love and loss — one biographical, the other mythological.
The story of my maternal aunt’s lover, his brother, their death in the Sinai desert during the 1973 Israeli-Arab war and my aunt’s subsequent search for his body is juxtaposed to the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus’s descent into the underworld and his double loss of Eurydice. Orpheus loses his lover first to death in the mortal realm and then again when he transgresses against the injunction to never look back until both lovers have crossed the threshold dividing realms of the living and the dead.
The two videos are projected on opposite sides of the exhibition space forcing viewers to reenact Orpheus’ fateful turn.
