FOR X
FOR X is a series of single edition books made for a specific person and gifted to that person. Each book compiles material that is selected by a network of people linked to the person who is the book’s subject, for whom the book is made. I take responsibility for the book-project’s form: I choose the categories that make up its chapters, invite participants, and ultimately collage the book out of the materials that people submit in answer to single word prompts. However, since each submission is charged with personal meaning specific to the participant’s relation to the book’s subject — a shared memory, a reference only the two of them would understand — the content of the book materializes a web of human relationships spun over a lifetime and is fully decipherable only by one person.
